ESPGHAN What’s New – October/November 2022
Dear ESPGHAN Members and colleagues,
In a busy October full of important and successful schools and initiatives, the Scientific Committee of our Society met to plan our next Annual Meeting in Vienna, 17-20 May 2023. We are happy to announce abstract submission is open with a deadline of 14th December 2022.
The dedicated congress website with further information and a number of novelties can be found here. Please keep an eye on the website for all updates.
One recent highlight, from the Committee on Nutrition and the Education Committee, is the exciting new online course on Enteral Nutrition in Preterm Infants. This is the first ESPGHAN course in the format of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).
In order to increase our internal communication, we would like to trial a quarterly Open Forum for exchange and discussion. Our President Professor Ulrich Baumann and General Secretary Professor Mary Fewtrell will be available on an online platform for discussions, questions, suggestions and a general exchange on the 2nd of December at 14.00 CET (Link here). In order to make the session as interactive and efficient as possible, a pre-registration would be requested, with more information to be sent closer to the time of the call.

Important Information for Members – What is happening in ESPGHAN
ESPGHAN Position Statement
In light of recent discussions and recommendations from the WHO and interactions between paediatric organisations and manufacturers of breast milk substitutes, ESPGHAN has written a statement on our position and the full text can be found here. The topic is complicated and controversial, but has potentially significant implications for paediatric societies.
ESPGHAN Liaison Officer Role
We would like to bring your attention to a recent decision at Council to move forward with a new role within ESPGHAN. The new post of an ESPGHAN Liaison Officer should increase visibility and continuity in underserved areas. A separate Newsletter will be sent in the coming days with further details, including an outline on why this position is needed, roles and responsibilities and specifications for the role.
ESPGHAN PR and Communications Tender
In accordance with our Rules and Regulations, we have four tenders under review for our Public Relations and Communications requirements. This should be closed off before the end of 2022, and Members will be updated once confirmed.
ESPGHAN Communications update
An assessment of our internal communication is currently underway. We have employed the consulting firm Kienbaum to assess Council workings and the communication lines between Council and Committees. Some of this work is happening by personal (or online) interviews and some information is generated by a web-based questionnaire. We are awaiting the first preliminary responses and if the exercise proves useful, we are considering extending this further to the general membership. This will depend not least on finances and practicalities, and we will make a decision based on the first results.
